Pioneer Fire

Fire safety logs for gyms and leisure centres

Gyms have lots of people, heavy equipment and spaces such as studios, changing rooms and saunas. Clear exits and good checks matter, and so does reaching members who cannot hear the alarm over music or headphones.

First month £1, then £7.99 a month. Cancel any time to stop future charges. Payments are non-refundable.

Common fire risks in gyms and leisure centres

  • Equipment, mats and weights blocking exits and routes

Risk assessment prompts for gyms and leisure centres

The worksheet follows the five steps in GOV.UK guidance and gives example prompts like these. It helps you record an assessment. It is not a substitute for a competent assessor where you need one.

  • e.g. cardio equipment, sauna and steam heaters, laundry dryers, any cafe or kitchen
  • e.g. mats, foam equipment, towels, supplement stock
  • e.g. members using headphones, people in changing rooms and showers, classes, any pool
  • e.g. members with limited mobility, children in classes, people unfamiliar with the building
  • e.g. who stops music and equipment, checks changing rooms and studios, calls 999 and takes the roll

Questions from gyms and leisure centres

What fire safety checks should a gym do?

Check exits from studios, changing rooms and the gym floor are clear and openable, equipment is away from escape routes, cables are undamaged, sauna areas are clear and emergency stops work. Test the alarm weekly.

How do you evacuate members wearing headphones?

Plan for staff to sweep the floor, studios and changing rooms, and consider music and public address systems that stop when the alarm sounds. Practise at quiet times and record how long it takes.

How often should a gym run a fire drill?

GOV.UK says at least one a year, and record the results. Busy or higher-risk venues may need more.
