Fire safety for gyms and leisure centres
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
Gyms have lots of people, heavy equipment and spaces such as studios, changing rooms and saunas. That makes clear exits and good checks important.
Main risks
- Equipment blocking exits and routes.
- Members using headphones who may not hear the alarm.
- Cardio equipment and its cables.
- Sauna and steam room heaters.
- Laundry, towels and supplement stock.
Weekly checks
- Exits from studios, changing rooms and the gym floor clear and openable.
- Equipment, mats and weights away from escape routes.
- Plugs and cables undamaged.
- Sauna areas clear and controls working.
- Emergency stops and any public address system working.
Plan and drills
Plan how staff will reach members wearing headphones, check changing rooms and showers, and take a roll call. Practise at quiet times and record the results.
