Who can carry out a fire risk assessment?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
The law asks for a competent person. For a small, low-risk workplace that can be you, if you understand the hazards and the guidance. For more complex or higher-risk premises you should use a professional.
What competent means
A competent person has the training, experience and knowledge to identify fire hazards and judge whether your precautions are enough. It is about ability, not a single compulsory certificate.
When you can do it yourself
- The premises are small and simple.
- There is no sleeping accommodation.
- You have read the government guidance for your type of premises.
- You are confident you can identify the hazards and people at risk.
When to use a professional
- Larger buildings with several floors or complex layouts.
- Premises where people sleep, or where large numbers of the public gather.
- Premises with hazardous materials, cooking at scale or specialist equipment.
- Anyone who is simply unsure.
Choosing an assessor
Look for an assessor whose competence is backed by a recognised qualification or accreditation scheme, ask for references, and check they carry professional indemnity insurance. Ask them to explain their findings in plain English.
