Can I do my own fire risk assessment in the UK?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
In many small, low-risk workplaces you can do your own fire risk assessment. GOV.UK sets out the five steps. The key is to be honest about the hazards and to write it down.
The five steps
- Identify the fire hazards.
- Identify the people at risk.
- Evaluate, remove or reduce the risks, and decide what protection you need.
- Record your findings, make an emergency plan and train people.
- Review the assessment regularly and when things change.
Tips for a useful assessment
- Walk the whole building, including stores, roofs, cellars and outside areas.
- Talk to staff, who often know about problems you do not see.
- Be specific about actions: what, who and by when.
- Date it and set a review date.
Limits of doing it yourself
If your premises are complex, higher risk, or you are unsure whether your precautions are enough, use a competent assessor. A worksheet, including the one in Pioneer Fire, helps you record an assessment but is not a substitute for professional judgement where you need it.
