How much does a fire risk assessment cost in the UK?

By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read

There is no standard price. Cost depends on the size and complexity of the building, how many floors and people, the risks involved and how detailed the report is. A small, simple shop will usually cost far less than a large, multi-storey venue.

What affects the price

  • Floor area and number of floors.
  • What you do on the premises: cooking, sleeping accommodation, stored hazardous materials.
  • The assessor, their qualifications and where you are.
  • Whether the report includes an action plan and follow-up advice.

What to ask in a quote

  • Is the assessor competent and do they hold a recognised qualification or accreditation?
  • Is a site visit included, and a written report?
  • Does the price include a review date and any follow-up questions?
  • Do they have professional indemnity insurance?

Get more than one quote

Ask at least two or three assessors, and compare what is included, not just the price. Be careful with very cheap offers that are a generic template with no site visit.

Doing your own

Many small, low-risk premises can do their own assessment using government guidance. Complex buildings, anyone sleeping on site, or anyone unsure should use a competent assessor.
