How often should a fire risk assessment be reviewed?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
There is no fixed interval that applies to everyone. The rule is to keep your assessment under review and update it when something changes. Many businesses pick a regular date, often yearly, and review earlier if needed.
Set a regular review date
Choose a date, write it on the assessment and put it in your diary. Reviewing at least once a year is a sensible habit for most small businesses, but your own risks decide.
Review straight away if
- You change the layout or build new rooms or partitions.
- You change what the building is used for.
- The number of staff or visitors changes noticeably.
- You start storing different stock or using new equipment.
- You have a fire, a near miss or a failed check.
- Your alarm, lighting or equipment changes.
Record the review
Even if nothing changes, note the date, who reviewed it and that no changes were needed. A dated trail shows you keep it live.
