What happens in a fire safety inspection?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
Fire and rescue authorities can inspect non-domestic premises to check you are following fire safety law. They look at the building and at your paperwork.
What inspectors look at
- Escape routes, exits, fire doors and signs.
- Alarm, emergency lighting and extinguishers.
- Storage of materials and general housekeeping.
- Staff awareness and training.
What they will ask to see
- Your fire risk assessment.
- Records of checks, servicing, training and drills.
- Your emergency plan.
How to prepare
- Keep records in one place and up to date.
- Do your weekly checks and fix faults.
- Make sure staff know what to do.
- Be open and ask for advice.
After the inspection
If issues are found, you will normally be told what to fix and by when. Act on it, and record what you did.
