Fire safety for a home-based business: does the law apply?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
The main fire safety law covers non-domestic premises, and private homes are generally outside it. But if you use part of your home for business, employ people or have customers visiting, the position can change, and fire safety is sensible either way.
When it may apply
- You employ people who work at your home.
- Customers or clients visit regularly.
- You use a separate unit, garage or outbuilding for business.
Sensible steps either way
- Working smoke alarms and, where useful, a carbon monoxide alarm.
- Keep escape routes clear of business stock and equipment.
- Do not overload sockets, and keep chargers and batteries safe.
- Know your escape plan and tell anyone who works there.
Check your position
If you are unsure whether the law applies to you, ask your local fire and rescue service, and check your home and business insurance conditions.
