Do I need to follow fire safety rules if I am self-employed with no staff?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
If you have non-domestic premises such as a shop or unit, you can still be a responsible person even if you work alone. Customers, visitors and other people in the building matter too.
What to think about
- Do customers, clients or delivery drivers come in?
- Do you share the building with other businesses?
- Are you responsible for any part of the building?
Sensible steps
- Do a short fire risk assessment and write it down.
- Keep exits clear, test any alarm and check equipment.
- Have a plan for how you and visitors get out.
- Check your insurance conditions.
Shared buildings
If you rent a unit, ask the landlord for the fire risk assessment for the building and for details of the alarm and escape routes.
