What fire safety signs does a workplace need?

By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read

Fire safety signs help people find their way out and know what to do. Your fire risk assessment decides exactly what you need, but most workplaces use a standard set.

Common signs

  • Green fire exit signs along escape routes and at exits, usually with a running man and arrow.
  • "Fire door keep shut" signs on doors that must stay closed.
  • "Fire door keep locked shut" on doors that are locked.
  • Extinguisher identification signs and fire alarm call point signs.
  • A fire action notice near call points and exits.

Check them weekly

Make sure signs are visible, undamaged, well lit and not covered by decorations or stock. Replace any that have faded or fallen off.

Fire action notice

It should tell people what to do if they discover a fire or hear the alarm, where to go and how to raise the alarm. Keep the wording simple and match it to your emergency plan.
