How many fire extinguishers does a small shop need?

By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read

Your fire risk assessment decides how many extinguishers you need. Guidance commonly suggests at least two on each floor, with enough capacity for the floor area, but that is a starting point and not a rule for every premises.

Think about the fires you could have

  • General fires in stock, paper and packaging: water or foam.
  • Electrical equipment: CO2.
  • Cooking oil or fat in a staff kitchen: wet chemical, or a fire blanket for small pan fires.

Where to put them

  • Along escape routes and near exits.
  • Near the hazards they are for.
  • On brackets or stands, with a sign, and not hidden behind stock.

Ask a competent supplier

A competent fire equipment company can advise on the right type and number for your premises and floor area, and service them. Get the advice in writing and keep it with your assessment.

Check them weekly

A weekly look at each extinguisher: in place, pin and seal intact, no damage and the right type for the area. Record faults and fix them.
