How often should fire extinguishers be serviced?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
Fire extinguishers should be checked regularly by you and serviced by a competent person, normally once a year. Keep the service certificate with your fire safety records.
Your checks
A regular visual check by the responsible person is part of keeping extinguishers ready. Weekly is a good habit in a workplace, and it fits with your other checks.
What to look for
- In its place, on a bracket, and not blocked.
- Pin and tamper seal intact.
- No dents, corrosion or leaks.
- Pressure gauge in the green, where fitted.
- The right type for the area.
Annual service
A competent person should service each extinguisher, usually every year, and replace or recharge any that fail. Some types also need extended servicing at longer intervals, which your servicing company will schedule.
Keep the records
Store the certificates, note service due dates, and record any extinguishers that were used, damaged or replaced.
