Does my small business need a fire alarm?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
You must be able to detect a fire and warn people. In a very small, simple premises that may be as basic as smoke alarms and a shout. In larger or more complex premises a fire alarm system is likely to be needed. Your risk assessment decides.
What to think about
- The size and layout of the building and the number of floors.
- Whether staff can hear a shout or hand-operated device in every area.
- Whether people sleep on site or work alone.
- The hazards you have, such as cooking or stored materials.
Types of system
Options range from battery or mains-linked smoke alarms to a full addressable fire alarm panel with call points, detectors and sounders. A competent fire alarm company can advise what suits your premises.
Look after it
Whatever you have, test it weekly, record the result, and have it serviced by a competent person.
