How do I check a fire door?

By Joe Cooper. Last reviewed 26 October 2026.

Short answer: Look for a label or plug showing the fire rating. Open the door halfway and let go: it should close fully and latch by itself. Check the gaps are small and even, the seals are present and not painted over, the hinges are tight, and nobody has wedged the door open. If a door fails, record it and have a competent person repair it.

Six quick checks

  • Label or plug: look for a certification mark or a coloured plug on the edge of the door showing its fire rating.
  • Closing: open the door halfway and let go. It should close fully and latch on its own.
  • Gaps: the gap around the door should be small and even. Guidance commonly uses about 2 to 4 mm around the sides and top, with a larger allowance at the bottom. Check the figures for your door.
  • Seals: intumescent and smoke seals should be present, undamaged and not painted over.
  • Hinges and closer: hinges should be tight with no missing screws, and the door closer should work smoothly.
  • Glazing and damage: look for cracks, holes, or glass that has been replaced with the wrong type.

Never wedge it open

A fire door only works if it is shut. Wedges, extinguishers and boxes holding doors open are among the most common faults. If you need a door open for access, use an approved hold-open device linked to the fire alarm.

Doors on escape routes

Doors on escape routes should open easily from the inside without a key. Check that locks, bolts and handles work and that nothing blocks the door on either side.

When a door fails

Record the fault, put a note on the door, and have a competent person repair or replace it. Do not patch fire doors yourself with ordinary filler or screws, which can weaken them. Keep the repair record with your checks.
