How often should kitchen extraction and ducting be cleaned?

By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read

Grease builds up in kitchen extraction and can burn fiercely. How often it needs cleaning depends on how much you cook and what you cook, so there is no single answer.

Daily and weekly

  • Clean hood surfaces and wipe up grease.
  • Wash or replace filters as often as your use demands, and check they are fitted properly.
  • Look for grease dripping or pooling.

Ducting

Ducting needs cleaning by a competent specialist. Many follow industry guidance for kitchen extract cleaning, which sets intervals according to hours of use. Heavy use, such as grilling and frying all day, needs cleaning far more often than occasional use.

Records

Keep the cleaning certificates, note when the next clean is due and tell your insurer if they ask. Add it to your equipment register.
