What is the difference between a smoke alarm and a fire alarm system?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
A smoke alarm is a single device that detects smoke and sounds an alarm on its own. A fire alarm system is a wired or wireless network of detectors, manual call points and sounders controlled by a panel.
Smoke alarms
- Cheap and simple.
- Each unit sounds on its own, though some can be linked.
- May be enough for very small, low-risk premises, if your assessment agrees.
Fire alarm systems
- Detectors, call points and sounders linked to a panel.
- Show where the alarm was triggered.
- Often needed in larger or more complex premises.
- Need regular servicing by a competent person.
Which do you need
Your fire risk assessment decides. Think about the size of the building, who is in it and how fast everyone must be warned. If in doubt, ask a competent alarm company.
