Do I need emergency lighting in a small shop or office?

By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read

Emergency lighting helps people get out if the normal lights fail. Whether you need it depends on your premises. Windowless areas, stairs and longer escape routes usually do. Your risk assessment decides.

Where it is usually needed

  • Escape routes with no natural light.
  • Stairs and corridors.
  • Rooms where people gather in numbers.
  • Near exits and fire equipment.

Where it may not be

Very small, single-room premises with plenty of daylight and short routes to the door may need less. A competent person can advise.

Testing and records

Check indicator lights weekly, have a short test done monthly and a full-duration test once a year. Record each one and any faults.
