What is a PEEP (personal emergency evacuation plan)?

By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read

A personal emergency evacuation plan, or PEEP, explains how a particular person will get out in an emergency. You should consider one for anyone who might struggle to evacuate quickly.

Who might need one

  • People with mobility impairments.
  • People who are deaf or hard of hearing, or blind or partially sighted.
  • People with cognitive or health conditions.
  • Someone who is pregnant or has a temporary injury.

What to include

  • The person's route out and any equipment needed.
  • Who will help them and a back-up.
  • How they will be alerted, for example a vibrating pager for someone who cannot hear the alarm.
  • Any refuge or safe waiting point, and how the fire service will know.

Agree it with the person

Talk it through with them, keep it private, test it in a drill and review it when anything changes.
