Pioneer Fire

Fire safety for hairdressers and beauty salons

By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read

Salons have a few particular fire risks: heated tools, flammable products, laundry and clients who may be hard to move quickly.

Main risks

  • Hair dryers, straighteners and wax heaters left on.
  • Aerosols, hairspray and chemicals stored near heat.
  • Tumble dryers with blocked filters.
  • Lots of cables and adaptors at each station.
  • Clients in the middle of treatments.

Weekly checks

  • Hot tools switched off and left to cool somewhere safe.
  • Products stored correctly and away from heaters.
  • Dryer filters cleaned, laundry not left running unattended.
  • Cables undamaged and sockets not overloaded.
  • Clear routes from treatment rooms to the exit.

Training and plan

Teach staff what to do about clients who are mid-treatment, who calls 999 and where to meet. Run a drill and record it.
