What is a fire log book and do I need one?
By Joe Cooper · · 3 min read
A fire log book is simply a record of your fire safety checks and actions. There is no single legal form you must use, but you do need to keep good records, and a log book is the easiest way to do it.
What goes in it
- Weekly alarm tests and fire safety checks.
- Faults found and how they were fixed.
- Service and inspection records for the alarm, lighting and extinguishers.
- Staff training and fire drill results.
- Dates of risk assessment reviews.
Why it is worth keeping
A dated log shows an inspector, insurer or landlord that you check regularly, and it helps you spot patterns such as a door that is always wedged open.
Paper or digital
Either works if it is dated, complete and easy to find. A digital log saves time and cannot be lost in a drawer. Pioneer Fire is a digital fire log book you can use on your phone.
